I’ve been fiddling around with infographics over the last few nights. The files are massive! I thought about including a few of them in my existing posts but I’m afraid they would dramatically increase page-load times. Anyway, here’s one I just created…
Keep in mind, there are many things you can do to downplay your poor head shape, pale skin, etc. Check out this post for more information. And if you’re a 90-pound balding weakling, hit the gym for Pete’s sake!
And, finally, a question: do you have a big pair of cojones? If so,consider trying out the most gangster hairstyle for balding men!

Very funny. Unless it happens to you. Going bald is not a choice. It happens or it doesn’t happen. It happened to me. When shape head numbers one through four go bald, what do they do? Wear a brown paper bag over their heads? Number five IS a choice, unless you happen to actually be a cancer patient. If you are, my heart goes out to you. Before I went bald I once shaved off all my hair to try on the bald look. It didn’t work for me. I hated the look and I hated the ‘hair shadow’ effect. I hated the stubble that grew back on top of my head within 24 hours. No, it was the male pattern bald look I wanted, with a neatly trimmed fringe of hair on the sides and in back and slick, smooth shiny hairless top. That is what I now have and I love it. I will not be shaving off the rest of my hair, but I will keep it short and neatly trimmed. That works for me.
By the way, I am well over six feet tall and big, but not fat. I’m as physically fit as you can expect from a 75 year old man. I’m a grandpa, so I have earned my MPB degree from the school of hard knocks. 🙂
You’re right. This post was mostly referring to the “full” bald look — i.e. fully shaved. I love having older, wiser men such as yourself comment, but the vast majority of my readers are approx. 17-40. And severely bald/balding men in that age range tend to buzz their heads, these days. It’s the default style and it’s generally considered cool and socially acceptable to shave your head if you’re balding — some love it, some don’t! Young men with the full Norwood 5s, 6s, etc., such as Prince William, who hold onto their thinning locks are often ridiculed for their baldness, whereas young(ish) men who shave their heads, like the Rock or Jason Statham (in 2005!) are considered cool and hip.
Dealing with hair loss tends to be easier for older men, as they have more life experience and are more secure, generally speaking. Also, I’ve noticed older women hate the buzzed look. They seem to think it’s a “thuggish” style. I believe it’s a generational thing, but I could be wrong.
Since I went bald most photos taken of me were with a baseball cap. I love the few photos of me that were taken with my head uncovered. They look great. The side shot showing my profile are my favorite ones. What a great MPB profile! The front photos look great, too. It is obvious I was meant to be male pattern bald. I am a ‘spittin’ image of one of my great grandfather on my mother’s side. I never met him, as he died a few years before I was born. He was Norwood 7 bald like Dr Phil. My mom sent me his photo after I told her I was going bald. One look at that photo reassured me that I would not regret letting myself go bald. It kind of makes me wish I would bald further to Norwood 7, but if I don’t that’s OK. Norwood 6 is wonderful.
Also, you’re right about the full “bald” or Bruce Willis look not working for everyone! Some men really can’t pull it off, unfortunately. I know, I’m one of them!
