If you’re reading this, you’re probably a millennial…barely.
And you’ve probably only barely heard of Paul Simon, a singer/songwriter famous for his hits as one half of the legendary folk-duo, Simon and Garfunkel, as well as his solo hits in the 70s and 80s.
But now’s as good a time as any for you to discover and hopefully become inspired by Paul Simon’s lyrical brilliance and understated virtuosity as a guitarist.
The Paul Simon song I’m talking about for the sake of this post is “Duncan,” a deep track if there ever was one. I’ll embed the song/video at the bottom of this post.
Duncan is a coming-of-age tale, chronicling a desperate-but-hopeful character named Lincoln Duncan, who heads down the turnpike to New England in pursuit of an elusive dream, happiness, and a new life. Perhaps he’s not all that much unlike yourself.
He notes the holes in his confidence, along with the holes in the knees in his jeans. He’s in the prime of his life, much like you are now, but he’s struggling to overcome his own insecurities and depression.
Duncan’s mindfulness — or his ability to be present and experience life in the moment — helps him find some perspective on life, lose his virginity, and gain a sense of gratitude by the song’s closing verse.
His ambition is another trait that helps him conquer his own demons. He keeps moving, trying, and striving to do better and make something of himself, even though he’s a wounded and deeply flawed character.
Motion. Getting action. It’s one of the best ways to stay sane in the face of hair loss and other crises of the body, mind, and spirit. I’ve mentioned this numerous times, most notably in my post describing how to beat the balding blues.
Below is the song. Whether you’re balding in your teens, 20s, or not balding at all, I believe you’ll benefit for giving it a listen.
