Minoxidil Chronicles Part I – Low Expectations and Pleasant Surprises

Five years after launching this blog in 2016, I realized I was going bald in the summer of 2021. I was a little surprised by the discovery given my age (36). Also, I observed a mildly unusual variety of hair loss (just a touch of thinning at the “whorl” or “cowlick” area of my crown). My hairline was fine.

A few days later, I purchased a three-pack of liquid minoxidil via Amazon.

Like everyone who begins a hair loss treatment regimen, I was nervous in the early stages of treatment. I had many questions and concerns…

  • Will the minoxidil cause skin irritation or other dermatological issues?
  • How much of a hassle will the product be to use?
  • Will I experience any of the medication’s rare side effects, such as heart palpitations?
  • What are my odds of achieving a favorable outcome with the treatment?
  • Do I have enough discipline to stick with the minoxidil on a long-term basis?

A year and a half later, I can answer all of those questions.

Pleasant Surprises

First, I’ve noticed no significant skin irritation on my scalp since I’ve begun using minoxidil.

And the product has had a limited effect on my lifestyle overall.

It only takes a minute or two to apply minoxidil to my scalp, and it was an easy treatment to add to my daily routine. I brush my teeth for five to ten minutes every night, and it only takes me about a minute to recharge my hair follicles with minoxidil.

Results

Within about four months or so, I seemed to have a little more coverage at my crown (again, it was just the very beginning of a thinning spot, isolated at the “cowlick” area). I was pleased that the treatment started to work as quickly as it did.

In part two of this series, I’ll explain why I chose to use the product only once per day instead of twice per day.
