Honestly, I could easily make a list of 800 likely celebrity finasteride users if I wanted to.
After all, most celebrities don’t go bald.
Why is that?
Are they, as a group, somehow less susceptible to genetic hair loss than the rest of us?
No, I doubt that’s the case.
While A-listers have better genetics overall than average slobs — sharper jaw lines, more symmetrical features, prettier eyes, and perhaps slightly less baldness as a group — celebrities still lose their hair.
Or, at least they should lose their hair…
But many celebs seem immune to the dreaded baldness gene, even well into their 50s and 60s, when the vast majority of men experience some degree of pattern hair loss.
So I’ll go out on a limb here and make this hypothesis: I’d imagine a high percentage of Hollywood entertainers use finasteride, the controversial yet highly effective medication that treats hair loss in 9 out of 10 men.
Most of them won’t admit to using the drug, granted. And why should they? Hollywood is a town notoriously prejudiced against balding men.
But there are a few refreshing exceptions to the rule — men who have openly acknowledged their own hair loss struggles and discussed the medical treatments they’ve used to manage the condition. Insider reports have also “outed” a few potential celebrity finasteride users. I try to avoid the gossip game here on Hair Loss Daily, so I’ll stick to the facts.
For this list, I’m only including users who have either admitted to using the drug or who reportedly use it. Ready? Let’s begin.
8 Reported Celebrity Finasteride/Propecia Users
1. Bradley Cooper (Unconfirmed)
His hair mysteriously seems to thicken up before every major role or publicity tour. I’ve seen photos of him that show some pretty dramatic thinning.
A 2014 Huffington Post article mentions the actor’s reported use of finasteride, citing an “inside” source.
Cooper was reportedly pleased with the medication, stating that it had been effective for him, per that source.
Six years and and many Oscar nominations later, Cooper’s locks appear to be as thick and healthy as they’ve ever been. So I’d venture to say the medication is still working and working well for him.
2. Justin Bieber (Unconfirmed)
He famously mocked Prince William for going bald, then started to shed his famous locks about eight years later. Bieber’s father is bald and apparently he has potent hair loss genes on both sides of the family.
He mentioned finasteride when discussing Prince William when he was still a kid, at the ripe age of 18 or so if I’m not mistaken. “Why would you do that to yourself?” Bieber said, referring to the Prince’s premature baldness. “There are drugs out there like Propecia that stop hair loss,” he added (I’m paraphrasing).
The fact that Bieber was aware of finasteride at that age, along with his genetic predispositions, led many to conclude that the “Baby” singer was a finasteride user himself.
Now, some recent pictures of Bieber definitely show some significant thinning and recession. His hairline used to be perfect. Hell, I even used him as a model for Norwood 1 — a non-balding hairline — when I made my Norwood scale post a few years ago. In case you’re not familiar, the Norwood scale is a scale that measures baldness in men. Click on the picture below for more info.
I’d speculate that finasteride worked for Bieber for a while, but ultimately not well enough.
If his hair is still important to him, Bieber may need to consider a more powerful medication like dutasteride which blocks 98% of DHT, the hormone that causes pattern hair loss. Comparatively, finasteride only reduces DHT levels by about 70%.
3. Ashton Kutcher (Confirmed – Dutasteride)
Okay…technically Kutcher didn’t use finasteride, but rather, he used an even stronger, similar medication. So I’m including him anyway. My list, my rules.
Kutcher refreshingly admitted that he used the aforementioned DHT-killing hair loss drug dutasteride for 10 years, from the ages of 25 to 35. He discontinued the medication as he prepared to start a family with wife Mila Kunis. Today, Kutcher claims to be off all hair loss treatments. I’m not sure if I believe him as he still seems to have a lot of hair — and men who quit Propecia after extended periods of use typically experience some degree of catch-up hair loss.
But I appreciate his willingness to discuss a “taboo” subject, at least by Hollywood standards.
4. Dax Shepherd (Confirmed)
It was Shepherd who got Kutcher to come clean about his dutasteride use. At 45 he’s maintaining his mane and doing better than the majority of his peers in the follicular department.
Shepherd also admitted to taking scalp injections from a noted hair loss “guru” in order to retain his signature Goldilocks hairdo. So clearly his locks are important to him. The former Punk’d star and popular podcaster has two daughters with wife Kristen Bell, and he doesn’t seem to be having any issues with the medication. Again, I appreciate his candor and am happy for him and his successes, follicularly and otherwise.
5. Rob Lowe (Confirmed)
I remember Lowe also commenting on Prince William’s horseshoe hairstyle, saying that seeing the handsome Prince go bald at such a young age was one of the most “tragic things” he’d ever witnessed in his life, or something to that effect.
Lowe also stated that upon noticing his own hair loss, he hopped on an “infusion” of drugs immediately. I imagine that infusion included finasteride.
“There’s a pill!” Lowe exclaimed. “The first glimmer that a single hair of mine was going to fall out, I was having that stuff mainlined into my fucking veins. And that’s what I did for the next 30 years.”
He still has a perfect hairline in his late 50s so obviously the drug has done its job and then some.
6. Donald Trump (Confirmed)
Trump’s hair has been the subject of headline fodder for decades now. In 2017, the White House doctor finally confirmed what many had long suspected: Trump uses finasteride for the prevention of male pattern baldness.
Chuck Todd, known for his goatee and thinning Caesar hairstyle, told Conan O’Brien that Trump had recommended the medication to him at one point. Todd expressed his concern about “the side effect” to the future president. Of course anyone vaguely familiar with the drug knows what Todd is talking about: impotence, ED, etc.
Trump replied that he had no such side effects.
On the subject of Trump’s hair, it’s important to note that the finasteride isn’t what caused its bizarre, rodent-like appearance. Most likely, Trump had some procedures done in the 80s, back when the hair transplantation field wasn’t particularly evolved.
7. Pete Davidson (Confirmed)
Pete Davidson is one of the few younger celebrities who talks openly about taking finasteride, going so far as to make it a subject in his stand-up routine. I remember him paraphrasing a conversation with his doctor about the drug which went something like this (based on my memory, it wasn’t that entertaining, so I’m not going to go back and re-watch it).
Pete: “What about the side effects? Will I still be able to perform?”
Doctor: “Oh yeah, that shouldn’t be an issue. Unless you have sex like 10 times per day.”
“Oh no. Once a day is plenty.”
“You should be fine then.”
Davidson has reportedly struggled with depression in recent years, particularly after his very public break-up with that super tan pop singer. I can’t think of her name. Police were even called to his residence on one occasion after he posted a comment on Instagram about “not wanting to be one earth” anymore.

Depression is a rare finasteride side effect. I’m not sure if that played a role in Pete’s depressive episode(s) or not, but I thought that was worth noting in his section.
8. Joe Rogan (Confirmed)
Joe Rogan is one of the world’s most prominent baldness advocates. Anytime a viewer of his massively successful podcast asks him for advice on dealing with hair loss, his response is always the same: Shave it, bitch!
Before Joe achieved enlightenment on the baldness front, he struggled with his own hair loss for many years and has openly discussed taking finasteride. He’s also used minoxidil, had multiple hair transplants, and tried other therapies to address his hair loss.
Eventually he gave up and let nature take its course. And there’s one thing no one deny: Joe looks good bald!
Conclusion – Celebrity Propecia Users
Did I miss anyone? Again, I mostly relied on confirmed or reliable sources for this article, not hearsay. If there are any other out and proud celebrity finasteride users, I’d love to hear about them. Your thoughts on finasteride, celebrity hair loss, etc. are welcome in the comment section.
