23-Year-Old Wants to Know If His Hairline is Maturing or Receding

I received an email from a reader recently. This blog is still pretty new, so it’s nice to know it’s live and is generating some views and hopefully informing a few people, too! I’m not a doctor and this isn’t a medical diagnosis, as I told the reader. He wanted my opinion and I provided it.

I’m not sure if I want to do a ton of hairline evaluations here, but I think doing one occasionally, while also getting feedback from my other readers (if applicable), may be beneficial to all parties. Email below:

Hi, thanks for all the helpful articles! Just wanted to see if there was a way for me to share to a forum (or you) and get opinions on if my hair was receding or maturing. I\’m only 23 so naturally I\’m going to be nervous at this age. Let me know if it can answer anything else. Thanks!

And next up is my response:

Got it, thanks Zach. It looks like you may have some very early recession going on, to me. Again, I’m not a doctor. But your hair looks a little bit “wispy” along the edges of your hairline (particularly in pics 2 and 4), and it appears that your hairline is either M or U shaped, which indicates an early receding hairline. The pics aren’t of the greatest quality so I could be mistaken. I’d suggest seeing a hair loss specialist if you’re concerned, so you can get a full diagnosis/prognosis. They can view your hair under a microscope and spot thinning long before it’s visible to the naked eye, and maybe even predict how your hair loss, if applicable, will progress over time.

Propecia and minoxidil are the two main, proven treatment options. I have articles on both up on the site if you’re interested. Both of those treatments work better on the crown than the hairline, unfortunately, but they can help treat frontal hair loss as well. Embracing it is a viable course too!

Thanks for allowing me to publish these. I can use a different name or whatever if you’d like. Honestly it’s still a pretty new site and not that many people are looking into this, so the odds of you being recognized for these pics with the blotted out face is basically 0. But let me know. And if you have other questions, feel free to contact me. You caught it early, assuming you are starting to recede, and you’re at a point where no one is likely to notice it for awhile, so that’s the good news. And treatments are available, as I said, and I’m sure you know. Cheers,

Robert
